How far do you go to get the color combo you want?
Our ideal Hyundai Kona Limited AWD is Sunset Orange with the Gray/Back interior.
being leather of the “long wearing, not fancy” variety, and plastic; the all black interior is extra cave-y.
The closest one we can find is over 32 0 miles away.
our next choice is Surf Blue, with the same two-tone interior.
There are two within 50 miles, (though not at our preferr ed dealer) and more than 5 within 150 miles (so our preferred dealer can probably get an inventory swap without too much hassle) .

~ 5 hours/~250 miles is my limit, unless it is something rare like BAT-worthy.
I buy cars every 5 years or so I will spend an entire Saturday on it.

For me, color is only a tiebreaker when all other things are equal. But if we’re talking about identical vehicles, same price, I might drive 50 or so miles to get the one I prefer.

I’ d go as far as needed to get the color I wanted and would be flexible with options on a used car but only take exact if new.

All else being equal I’d make a pretty long trip to get the right car. What’s a day’s driving, to have the exact car you want for the next __ years? I’d draw the line at a distance I’m comfortable with covering (round trip) in a day.

If you’re buying new, you’re probably gonna be paying it off for a while. You want to feel like all the cash you put down and continue to fork over was worth it. You don’t want to be thinking to yourself all the time “man, I wish I had tried a little harder to find the color J wanted.” It’s also probably not something you’re doing that often, so to me it seems worth it to spend the extra time and effort to find what you want, and spend up to a whole weekend driving to pick it up, maybe staying overnight , and driving back.

Depends on how long you’re planning on keeping the car and whether or not you can turn the trip into a little vacation . I’d fly somewhere to pick up a car if there was a national park or something on the way back.

If you’re getting brand new and plan to keep it for awhile I would definitely do the drive . What’s the fun in getting a new car if it's not exactly what you want?

I have gone 3 hours one way to get the color I wanted for a price I could afford, but that was for a dream car. Most of the time I look for the best condition/price/options in the local area
more than color.

Cars are expensive, get the one you want. That said, can’t your preferred dealer arrange to have one you want transferred? Or even order one specifically for you (have no idea what that does to the incentives)?

Hyundai does not really do orders, dealers can “request” certain trims/color combos, but allocation is highly dependent on volume, and we are in a small market. A dealer to dealer transfer/trade is certainly possible, but this is a high-demand vehicle right now and I don’t know how willing other dealers are going to be to trade an interesting color for a Thunder Grey or White...

If ask your preferred dealer to get the red one for you. Yes it’s a lot of miles, but when I worked at a dealership we get cars that were 3-400 miles away a few times. The slow winter months is probably a good time to ask for a favor like that.
If not get the blue one, it looks nice

I’ve had dealerships find and transfer in cars for me a few times. It’s painless. They usually just do a trade with another dealer.

I have driven over 3 hours for a car that had the options I wanted and was in my price range.
F or a more specialized car, I have also driven 12 hours , but I made a long weekend road trip out of it.
I agree with the others, get the car you want, don’ t compromise.

I refuse to pay a dime unless the car is 100% perfect. I’m not spending 5 figures for the wrong product.
It’s a one-time drive to the dealership. Sacrifice one weekend’s worth of travelling to get the right product.

I’d drive or fly to get t he one I want, after asking my local place to get it for me. No question. You’re paying a lot of money, “second choice” shouldn’t be in your vocabulary.

If your paying that much for a new car you should get what you want.
When I bought my truck I wanted a blue, 4 cylinder. There was 2 in the whole province so I drove 250 kms(one way) to buy one.
